What is covered under medical care?

When you qualify for workers’ compensation in Missouri, it means you can get paid medical care for your injuries. However, as with anything, there are rules that you have to abide by. Not all medical care may be covered. It may only be covered if you do certain things or follow certain guidelines. Understanding the rules of workers’ compensation will help you as you navigate your rights.

According to the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, you must see the doctor or other healthcare provider chosen by your employer when you suffer an injury at work. If you want to see your own provider, then it will not be covered under your benefits. You should discuss this with your employer, who may end up agreeing to let you see your chosen doctor.

You must also submit to medical exams at the request of your employer when you are receiving benefits. If you refuse an exam that has been deemed reasonable, then you could forfeit your right to benefits.

If you have to travel to see your doctor, then this is covered under your benefits. Your benefits will reflect the payment of these expenses. However, the limit is 250 miles one way.

Finally, you must agree to allow your medical records pertaining to your workers’ compensation case to be released to your employer.
