What are good safety guidelines when working on a roof?

On Behalf of | Aug 24, 2018 | Construction Accidents, Firm News |

Falls are one of the top safety issues on Missouri construction sites. This is especially true when working on roofs. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has put together some safety guidelines to help workers avoid falls when working on a roof. Knowing these safety tips can help you to be safer when you are at work.

The tips fall into three categories. The first is to plan ahead. This means that you should gather and inspect all safety equipment. Make sure safety lines, harnesses and other equipment are not frayed or worn. Make sure any fixed safety devices are securely installed. Also, make plans for who will be working where.

The second category is to ensure you have all the needed equipment. If you were missing anything or any of your gear was too worn to use, make sure to replace it. It might help to use a checklist so you can ensure you have everything you need to work safely. General equipment needed includes harnesses, guardrails and covers or guards for openings.

The last category is training. Everyone needs to have proper safety training so they know how to use the safety gear and equipment. You should make sure that everyone you work with has this training. You are working as a team up there, so everyone needs to know what they are doing and look out for the safety of everyone else. If you feel someone lacks training you should speak up and let your supervisor know. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
