How can road rage cause car accidents?

On Behalf of | Dec 22, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

You may have heard before about how angry drivers can cause car wrecks without warning. This phenomenon, called road rage, is important for any driver to learn about.

Whether you are traveling on a back road or on a crowded highway, you are at risk of encountering someone with this problem.

Overexaggerated reactions to others

According to Psychology Today, going out for a drive when you are already angry is one way to increase the likelihood of road rage. Aggression toward others and a need for revenge fuels risky driving, which can lead to an accident.

If you notice someone yelling and gesturing behind the wheel while on the road, try to avoid provoking them. Turn on the radio or distract yourself so that you do not also become annoyed and frustrated as well.

Disregard of road rules

A person full of rage directed at a single person may try to tailgate another driver in order to antagonize him or her. This can lead to a lot of broken road rules, such as ignored red lights or stop signs.

This puts everyone on the road in danger, especially you or any cars near the angry driver. You may also notice this person weaving in and out of different lanes on a highway while pursuing someone.

Increased speeding

Some drivers may break the speed limit in order to follow a car that aggravated them. Not only can this cause a car accident, but it also leaves you with less time to react to any roadblocks or cars suddenly pulling out.

Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, so staying aware of the ways road rage leads to a crash is important.
