How music can impact someone’s driving

On Behalf of | May 8, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Listening to music in the car is certainly not uncommon. While there are those who drive in silence and others who listen to podcasts, many people will stream music from their phone or listen to the radio. For some, they turn on music every single time that they drive, and it’s just part of the experience.

But could this make accidents more likely? It can, and let’s take a quick look at some of the reasons why.

Loud music slows reaction times

First and foremost, the volume of the music does play a role. If it’s very loud, that can reduce someone’s reaction times. Essentially, they are overloading their brain with information and slowing down its processing time, which means they may not react as quickly to things around them. Slower reaction times could lead to rear-end accidents, for example.

It can become a distraction

Similarly, music can be a major distraction in the car. This is especially true when people are singing along with the music. Someone who turns on a classical music recording may not be all that distracted, and it can even help them calm down and drive more slowly, which may help. But someone who turns on modern pop or rock hits and sings along with all of the lyrics is thinking about the music in addition to driving their vehicle. This is a form of distracted driving that could lead to a serious crash.

Since most drivers listen to music, there’s always a risk that you could be struck by someone who is distracted behind the wheel. If you suffer injuries, you need to know how to seek financial compensation.
