How do concussions affect you mentally and physically?

Missouri residents like you want to seek medical attention after a head injury. You may not feel like anything is amiss right away. But in reality, you could end up suffering from a concussion.

Due to the wide spread of concussive symptoms, you may not even know you have a concussion at first. This is all the more reason to seek a professional opinion. After all, severe concussions can cause irreversible harm to your brain and body.

Physical effects of concussions

Mayo Clinic looks at all symptoms of concussion, both mental and physical. The physical symptoms often appear first. They are sometimes the most obvious type of symptom, too. Physical symptoms may include headache, nausea or vomiting. You may lose consciousness for a period of time. It is possible that you struggle to get to sleep. You may also have trouble waking up, instead. You may experience trouble with your sensory input. For example, you might find that your sense of taste or smell changed. You might “see stars” or bright flashes of light in your vision. You might experience black spots instead. You could also experience tinnitus, which is a constant ringing in the ears.

Mental and emotional effects of concussions

Non-physical symptoms often take longer to show up. Other people may have a harder time noticing them, too. They often involve changes to your mentality or emotions. For example, you may feel more irritable. You might snap at others more often. You could suffer from debilitating confusion. You might experience life as if through a fog. You could also suffer from memory issues. You may not remember the incident leading to your concussion. You might also forget short term things. This could lead to asking the same question over and over.

Regardless of the cause or intensity of symptoms, you should seek medical help. They can tell you if you need more serious medical intervention.
