5 signs your car accident brought on PTSD

In just a few seconds, a car accident can turn your life upside down. Whether the sounds of crashing metal, the pain of serious injuries or the sights of blood and damage, car accidents are both physically and emotionally traumatic.

Both serious and minor car accidents could develop post-traumatic stress disorder, though the more severe an accident the higher the likelihood of significant emotional trauma. There are six easily recognizable symptoms of PTSD that will impact your quality of life and your ability to earn a living.

1. Reliving the accident

A serious accident can lead to an individual replaying the incident over and over again. If you experience flashbacks, you may hear and see every detail of the incident, feeling like it is occurring over again.

2. Intrusive feelings

Though the details and thoughts of the accident are unpleasant, you may find yourself obsessing over them. These thoughts can interrupt you while working or sneak in when you are trying to relax or unwind.

3. Depression

It is common to fall into depression when serious injuries or mental stress are impacting your quality of life. Depression will sabotage your ability to function normally.

4. Sleep interruptions

Those with depression or PTSD can experience difficulties staying asleep or falling asleep. Nightmares and anxiety can lead to insomnia.

5. Hypervigilance

It may be terrifying to get behind the wheel of a car once you know the pain and trauma of an accident. This can lead to hypervigilance on the road and being jumpy or skittish when driving.

These are serious symptoms that you should not ignore. Counseling, medication and other resources can help you cope with PTSD.
