Rear-end crashes and visual, manual and cognitive distractions

Millions of rear-end collisions occur every year across the country and although most appear to be minor crashes, they can cause significant injuries.

There are various reasons for such collisions, but the main cause is that the negligent driver was preoccupied with one or more visual, manual or cognitive distractions.

A little background

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, distracted driving was responsible for 3,142 fatalities in 2020. These deaths resulted from every kind of accident from head-on crashes to rear-end collisions. When we think of distracted driving, we automatically think of texting, but there is much more to this kind of behavior.

Manual distraction

While cellphone use comes under the heading of a manual distraction, any time you take your hands off the steering wheel, it could be because you were eating or drinking, smoking, adjusting the radio or reaching for something on the floor or in the passenger seat.

Visual distraction

Looking at the screen of an electronic device is just one of the many visual distractions you face as a driver. This involves anything that takes your eyes off the road, such as changing the station on your radio, looking at a billboard or turning your head to check on your child in the back seat.

Cognitive distraction

Cognitive distraction occurs when your mind wanders. You might engage in conversation with your passengers or listen to the news on the radio. You might easily become lost in thought, especially if you feel tired or stressed.

Distractions and the rear-end collision

You may be aware of potential distractions and practice safe driving. But what about the distracted driver who rear-ends your car? If his negligence causes your back or head injury, seek legal guidance to determine what your next steps should be.
