The most dangerous highways in Missouri

Missouri is home to many highways, but some are notorious for their high accident rates. Understanding which highways pose the greatest risk can help drivers stay safer on the road, and better ensure they can avoid unfortunate incidents in the future.

Interstate 70 (I-70)

Stretching across the state, I-70 is one of the state’s busiest highways. This major east-west route sees a significant amount of traffic, including heavy trucks. High speeds, congestion, and frequent construction zones contribute to its danger and the number of car crashes on its roads.

Interstate 44 (I-44)

I-44 is another major artery, running from St. Louis to the Oklahoma border. It experiences heavy traffic, particularly from commercial vehicles. High speeds, sharp curves, and variable weather conditions can make I-44 a hazardous route.

U.S. route 63 (US 63)

US 63 runs north-south through the center of the state, connecting several major cities. Often called “the most dangerous road in the state,” it has narrow lanes, limited visibility, and fast drivers. It’s the site of numerous accidents, including many head-on collisions.

Interstate 55 (I-55)

I-55 is a key north-south corridor connecting St. Louis to the southern part of the state. This highway experiences heavy commuter traffic, especially near metropolitan areas. It is also prone to severe weather conditions, such as fog and ice, which can create dangerous driving situations.

Staying informed about the most dangerous highways in Missouri can help you stay alert.  Exercise extra caution when traveling on these routes by adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions, and staying aware of road conditions.
