What are the most dangerous driving distractions?

Driving demands your full attention, so distractions compromise safety on the road. However, many motorists still spend time doing activities that take their attention from the road.

Avoiding common driving distractions may help you avoid serious auto accident injury.

Cell phones and devices

Texting, calling or using apps diverts attention from the road, increasing the risk of accidents. A split-second distraction can have devastating consequences.

Conversation with passengers

Animated discussions distract the driver, especially if they turn to look at others in the car. Save exciting, emotional or provocative conversations for another time.

Food and beverages

Munching on a burger or sipping a drink behind the wheel may seem harmless, but it takes attention away from driving. Juggling food and beverages can lead to reduced reaction times and impaired control.

Personal grooming activities

Fixing hair, applying makeup or adjusting clothing while driving creates hazardous conditions. These activities demand visual and manual attention, diverting focus from the road.

Vehicle controls

While helpful for directions, GPS tech can be distracting if used irresponsibly. Programming routes, checking the screen or adjusting settings diverts attention. Set your course before hitting the road.

Tuning the radio, adjusting climate controls or using other vehicle features may seem harmless. However, even quick fixes take your eyes and hands off the road. Make necessary adjustments once you stop moving.

Missouri had almost 200,000 distracted driving accidents from 2012 to 2021 according to the Department of Transportation. The state also had more than 1,000 fatalities caused by driving distractions in both 2020 and 2021. Understanding the risks protects everyone who shares the roadways.
