Can brain trauma change your personality?

The aftermath of a serious crash often comes along with its own set of hardship and trauma. This is particularly true for sufferers of traumatic brain injury (TBI). After all, these injuries affect all aspects of your physical and mental health.

Some effects are not as well known as others, too. For example, some TBI sufferers experience an alteration in their personality.

Deregulated emotions

Mayo Clinic looks into traumatic brain injuries and their impact on your overall health. One of the issues talked about less often involve changes to your personality. How does this happen? Different areas of the brain contribute to certain aspects of your personality. Examples include your emotional control and regulation along with suppression of impulse.

Thus, when damaged, these areas of the brain cannot regulate as they should. This leads to emotional outbursts, uncharacteristic bouts of bad temper and rash behavior. This is hard for you and your loved ones alike. In particular, loved ones may find increased agitation, anger and temper hardest to handle. This is especially true if you did not have anger issues before the crash.

Instability at work

For you, the inability to regulate emotions might make you anxious, tense and prone to outbursts. You may not handle stress as well as you once could. This makes it hard in your daily life. Most importantly, it can make things difficult for you at the workplace, too. If you cannot handle workplace stress without breaking down, it creates a difficult situation for everyone.

Over time and with proper medical attention, some personality changes revert to normal. For some people, though, the changes seem persistent and become a root cause of frustration. In either case, medical attention can improve your standing.
