Behavioral changes
Some people undergo significant behavioral changes after a head injury. This can entail irritability, increased aggression, mood swings, depression, and unhealthy dependency. Cognitive effects may also have a lasting impact. For instance, some people will have issues processing information or may find abstract thinking to be far more difficult than before. Confusion is also common after a head injury, as are problems with focus and memory.
Disabilities
Disabilities involving motor functions can have a lifelong impact on a person. In terms of muscle control, some people experience stiffness or spasms. Problems carrying objects, difficulty talking and swallowing, and even vision problems can also take a toll. In extreme cases, paralysis may occur depending on what part of the brain is damaged. Rehabilitation is often recommended for disabilities and deficits related to serious head injuries.
Sensory difficulties
When senses are impacted a person can experience ripple effects in many different areas of their lives. For instance, it can be challenging to gauge temperatures, distinguish between common items, regulate touch and pressure, and process sensory information. Some people will also experience a decreased sense of taste and smell, or problems hearing. Vision loss can also occur, as can blurred vision and involuntary movements of the eye (also known as nystagmus).
