How car accidents cause serious arm injuries

On Behalf of | May 23, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Car accidents can cause a wide range of injuries, and serious arm injuries are among the most common. Whether caused by the force of impact or being struck by parts of the vehicle, these injuries can have lasting effects on mobility and function.

Here are some key facts about car accidents and serious arm injuries.

How do arm injuries happen in crashes?

During a collision, the body is often thrown forward or sideways. Arms can slam against the steering wheel, dashboard or door. In rollover accidents, the arms may get trapped or crushed. Drivers and passengers who instinctively raise their arms to protect themselves may also suffer direct trauma. Even airbags, while life-saving, can cause injuries when deploying at high speeds.

Common types of arm injuries

Arm injuries vary depending on the severity of the crash. Some of the most common include:

  • Fractures: Broken bones in the wrist, forearm, elbow, or upper arm are frequent. These often require surgery or casting.

  • Dislocations: Joints, especially the shoulder or elbow, can be forced out of place.

  • Soft tissue injuries: Torn ligaments, muscle strains, or deep bruises may limit movement and cause long-term discomfort.

  • Nerve damage: The brachial plexus and other nerves can be stretched or torn, leading to numbness, weakness or even paralysis in the arm.

Recovery from a serious arm injury can take weeks or even months. Some individuals may face ongoing pain, reduced range of motion or permanent loss of strength. In cases of nerve damage or multiple fractures, long-term rehabilitation may be needed. These injuries can also interfere with daily tasks and work, especially for those in physically demanding jobs.

If you have been injured in a crash that was not our fault, personal injury compensation could be available.
