What happens if Lyme disease is misdiagnosed?

On Behalf of | Jun 30, 2025 | Medical Malpractice |

Lyme disease is a serious illness that can be difficult to diagnose, and a misdiagnosis can lead to severe consequences.  The bacteria that cause Lyme disease spread quickly, and if left untreated or treated incorrectly, they can cause lasting damage to various systems in the body.

Prolonged illness and worsening symptoms

Misdiagnosing Lyme disease often leads to the condition worsening without proper treatment. Early symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, and muscle aches, can be mistaken for the flu or a viral infection. As the disease progresses, it spreads to the joints, heart, and nervous system. Misdiagnosis delays proper treatment, allowing the bacteria to cause more damage.

In later stages, Lyme disease can lead to severe joint pain, neurological problems, and even heart complications.

Unnecessary treatments and side effects

A misdiagnosis also means patients may receive unnecessary treatments. Doctors might mistakenly treat Lyme disease as another illness, leading to prescriptions for medications that don’t address the actual problem.

These treatments can cause unwanted side effects. If a doctor treats misdiagnosed Lyme disease as a bacterial infection, they may prescribe the wrong antibiotics. This could result in allergic reactions, digestive issues, etc., all without addressing the true cause of the symptoms.

Long-term health complications

When doctors misdiagnose Lyme disease, the bacteria can continue to affect the body, leading to chronic health issues. Some people develop “chronic Lyme disease,” where symptoms persist for months or even years, even after treatment.

Without proper care, patients may experience ongoing pain, fatigue, and cognitive issues that can greatly impact their quality of life. Misdiagnosis makes it more difficult to manage these long-term symptoms, as the initial treatment did not target the correct disease.

Misdiagnosing Lyme disease can lead to serious and lasting health consequences. In Missouri, where ticks are a common risk, recognizing the symptoms early and getting the right diagnosis is crucial. Seek proper testing and treatment to avoid the long-term effects of a misdiagnosis.
