Types of construction accidents that harm workers

It is a well-known fact that construction workers have one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. According to ConstructConnect, 937 construction workers died from job-related injuries in 2015. Construction sites are high-risk work environments.

Many workers in the Missouri area are aware of the potential dangers they face while they are at work. They may not be aware of the measures their employers must take to keep them safe. Construction workers should learn about the most common types of accidents that occur on worksites, so they can take measures to avoid them. Becoming aware of them can also help contractors identify when their injuries are the result of their employers’ negligence, so they can take further action to protect themselves and their right to workers’ compensation.

Falls

Many construction projects involve multiple levels and uneven floor surfaces. Falls are likely to occur when there are slick conditions, path obstructions, holes and collapsing structures. Contractors can avoid injury and death by observing their work environments.

Electrocutions

Construction sites often have exposed wires and electrical components. Workers should stay away from electrical wires and review proper safety protocol. They should also inform their supervisors of potential hazards.

Vehicles

Falling objects and moving vehicles often lead to workers getting crushed to death. Workers should wear helmets, safety goggles, high-visibility clothing and other appropriate safety gear, states Construction Global. They should also pay attention to their surroundings and co-workers.

Workers can avoid injury and death by observing their work areas. They should stay up-to-date on all federal, local and employer safety standards. They should also maintain a good work/life balance, come to work well-rested and take breaks as needed to ensure they are fully alert when they are at work.
