A guide to helping a family member after a workplace injury

When someone in your family experiences a workplace accident, it may be difficult to know what to do. You could have some fears and concerns about what your loved one will do next, but it is important to remember that this person needs your assistance now more than ever.

It may feel daunting to help a loved one through a work-related health crisis. While there is not a set of rules to follow when helping someone you love with a workplace injury, there are some helpful tips to remember.

Make some meals

Food goes a long way when comforting someone. This is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to help your family member feel better while he or she recovers. It may be difficult for him or her to make meals, so offer to bring some favorite dishes over.

Say something

Seeing a family member after an injury may feel awkward, but it is better to say something than remain silent. It is fine if you are not exactly sure what you should say, but at least let the person know you care and are willing to help.

Be proactive

It may feel natural to say, “Get in touch with me if you need me to do something,” but this does not help much. This puts pressure on the injured person to figure out ways for you to help. Instead, think of daily tasks that you can take off the person’s plate. Do laundry, help with bills or shop for groceries.

Help with a workplace claim

Because your family member is dealing with an occupational injury, he or she may qualify for workers’ compensation benefits. However, handling paperwork and contacting an attorney can be intimidating tasks for an injured person to accomplish. Offer to help with this process so your family member can get the money he or she needs to recover.
