How can I avoid prescription errors?

When you think of prescription errors, one of the first things that may come to mind is illegible writing. Though hard to decipher handwriting is a common reason many people in the Springfield area end up becoming victims of medical malpractice, it is not the only way.

According to RealSimple.com, annually, medical professionals make 1.5 million drug mistakes. Many individuals receive improper care, wrong prescriptions and inaccurate medication doses because their nurses, doctors and pharmacists read the prescribing physician’s orders wrong.

Error prevention tactics

Mistakes in prescribing and administering medication can be lethal. Patients are likely to develop adverse reactions and lose their lives in some cases. Because prescription errors can have a major impact on your life, you should consider the following information to avoid them.

Review all information on your prescriptions with your doctor before you leave their presence. Ask them for the proper spelling, pronunciation, dosage and frequency. You should also ask them why they are prescribing them and for how long. Be sure to mention any other medications you are currently on to eliminate the risk of adverse reactions with your other medicines. It is a good idea for you to keep a list of all medications and supplements on your person. Make a copy for your family to have in case of emergencies.

Prescription errors are highly preventable. Nurses, doctors and pharmacists should verify all prescribing information. Patients should interact with their health care providers and provide them with pertinent information to make them more accountable and less negligent in the delivery of their care and medications.
